Types of Fire Extinguishers

Powder Fire Extinguishers

  • Powder extinguishers contain a fine powder that can suppress fires involving various materials, including flammable gases and electrical equipment.
  • Suitable For: Class A, B, C fires, and electrical fires.
  • Not Suitable For: Fires in enclosed spaces, as the powder can impair visibility and may be hazardous when inhaled.

Foam Fire Extinguishers

  • Foam extinguishers are water-based with a foaming agent that creates a blanket over the fire, smothering flames and sealing vapors to prevent re-ignition.

  • Suitable For: Class A and B fires, including flammable solids and liquids like petrol and diesel.

  • Not Suitable For: Electrical fires.

Water Fire Extinguisher

    • Water extinguishers discharge water at high pressure to cool burning materials, effectively reducing the pyrolysis rate of fuels like wood, paper, and textiles.

    • Suitable For: Class A fires involving solid combustibles such as wood, paper, and textiles.

    • Not Suitable For: Electrical fires, flammable liquids, or gas fires.

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Fire Extinguisher

  • CO₂ extinguishers release carbon dioxide gas to displace oxygen, effectively suffocating the fire without leaving any residue.

  • Suitable For: Class B fires involving flammable liquids and electrical fires.

  • Not Suitable For: Fires involving solid combustibles like wood or paper.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher

  • CO₂ extinguishers release carbon dioxide gas to displace oxygen, effectively suffocating the fire without leaving any residue.

  • Suitable For: Class B fires involving flammable liquids and electrical fires.

  • Not Suitable For: Fires involving solid combustibles like wood or paper.

Types of Sprinklers

Sidewall Sprinkler

Installed on walls rather than ceilings, these sprinklers are designed to discharge water in a fan-shaped pattern, covering the area beneath and around them.

Ideal For:

  • Narrow spaces like hallways, offices, and small rooms where ceiling installations are not feasible.

Features:

    • Efficient for spaces with structural or aesthetic ceiling limitations.
    • Requires proper positioning to ensure adequate coverage.

Upright Sprinkler

Installed with the deflector facing upward, these sprinklers are designed to spray water in a dome-shaped pattern, covering areas above obstructions.

Ideal For:

  • Warehouses, industrial facilities, and spaces with open ceilings and exposed structural elements.

Features:

    • Effective in environments with high ceilings and potential obstacles.
    • Protects areas with complex layouts.

Conventional Sprinkler

Designed to disperse water in a circular pattern with equal distribution upward and downward, providing general fire protection.

Ideal For:

  • Areas requiring broad coverage, such as residential buildings and small commercial spaces.

Features:

    • Versatile and widely used.
    • Suitable for standard fire protection applications.

Pendant Sprinkler

Mounted to hang down from the ceiling, pendant sprinklers discharge water in a cone-shaped pattern, covering the area directly below.

Ideal For:

  • Offices, retail spaces, and other environments with finished ceilings.

Features:

  • Commonly concealed for aesthetic purposes.
  • Provides effective coverage in spaces with flat ceilings.

Type of Hose Reel

Fixed Type Fire Hose Reel

A stationary fire hose reel mounted to a wall. The hose can be manually unwound to the desired length during a fire emergency.

Features:

  • Simple and durable design.
  • Manual unwinding required.

Ideal For:

  • Low to medium-risk buildings, such as offices and apartments.

Swing Type Fire Hose Reel

This fire hose reel can pivot or swing horizontally, allowing better access and maneuverability during use.

Features:

  • Enhanced flexibility for users.
  • Suitable for confined spaces.

Ideal For:

  • Hotels, shopping malls, and narrow hallways.

Automatic Fire Hose Reel

Equipped with an automatic valve, this type of reel allows water to flow as soon as the hose is unwound.

Features:

    • Immediate water supply without manual valve operation.
    • Quick and user-friendly activation.

Ideal For:

  • High-risk environments like factories and warehouses.

Cabinet-Mounted Fire Hose Reel

Installed within a protective cabinet, this type keeps the hose reel clean and secure while maintaining accessibility.

Features:

    • Aesthetic and organized appearance.
    • Protection from environmental damage.

Ideal For:

  • Commercial spaces, airports, and public buildings.
