Our team also includes specialized HRD (Human Remains Detection) K9s. These highly trained dogs are skilled in locating human remains, specifically ignoring live human and animal scents. HRD dogs are essential for locating remains in crime scenes, missing persons cases, disaster events, and even small scent sources, providing critical assistance in recovery efforts.
“Train the Dog in Front of You” is a core philosophy that guides our approach to working with each K9 as the unique individual they are. We believe in tailoring training to each dog’s specific strengths and temperament.
Our team includes a variety of dogs, such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and several mixed-breed rescues from shelters or surrendered by former owners
.
Dogs with a high “toy drive” are particularly suited for urban search and rescue missions. For them, it’s a game of “hide and seek.” During training, team members hide with a toy, and when the dog finds them, they play together. This playful method motivates the dog to eagerly search for survivors during real missions.
Our K9 handlers come from diverse backgrounds, including civilians, firefighters, and EMS personnel, all united by their dedication to saving lives.
Each K9/handler team undergoes a rigorous national certification process in urban search and rescue (USAR) to ensure they are fully prepared for real-life operations. This certification, which must be renewed every three years, ensures that both the K9 and handler maintain the highest standards required for search and rescue missions.
K9s must be well-trained, physically fit, and emotionally mature to handle the demands of the job. The handler’s certification includes tests on search strategies and tactics, mapping, search and victim markings, as well as briefing and debriefing skills, in addition to advanced canine handling techniques. Together, these elements ensure the team’s readiness for SAR operations.
Disaster search K9s must possess a specialized set of skills to excel in their critical role. These include excellent agility, a reliable response to commands, and a focused bark alert to indicate when they have found a victim. K9s must also demonstrate a strong willingness to persist in their search, even when faced with extreme temperatures or distractions like animals, food, and noise.
In addition to these qualities, the canine must have the confidence to work independently, navigate slippery surfaces, balance on unstable objects, and move through dark tunnels. These skills are essential for successfully locating survivors in challenging environments.
Dogs can smell up to 100,000 times better than humans.
Their incredible sense of smell makes them invaluable in search and rescue missions.
Dogs can smell separately with each nostril!
This ability allows them to pinpoint the direction of a scent with remarkable accuracy.
Dogs can inhale and exhale simultaneously.
This helps them continuously take in new scents without losing the trail.
Dogs have a special scent-detecting organ called the vomeronasal organ, which humans lack.
This organ allows them to detect specific chemical signals, further enhancing their scent-tracking abilities.
